Vintage 2005 Results (Shaping up to be a GREAT year)

We expect that this year will end up being a blockbuster year for German and Austrian wine lovers.

Direct from the German Wine Institute: The young white wines already show balance, strength and pronounced fruit. They have great potential and reflect the classic profile associated with the unique character of German wines. Growers in the Mosel and Rheingau regions benefited from very sunny weather in late autumn that enabled them to harvest considerable quantities of Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese. Botrytis was rampant and we tasted some unbelievable TBAs still developing (the first time I've ever had a wine that was almost too intense).

Wine-growers throughout Germany are especially pleased with the red wines of 2005. They have everything a good red needs: lots of color, depth of flavor, and a long finish. The overall success of the 2005 crop was due to an exceptionally sunny year (particularly during the growing season), timely and sufficient precipitation, and the crowning touch of a "golden" October.

In Austria, much the same story - the white wines of the new year are fruit-driven and precisely defined, displaying wonderful harmony. The reds are characterized by a sleek, charming "Austrian" bouquet and clear varietal expression, comprising wines which offer drinking pleasure in their youth. The desert wines display monumental intensity and impressively brilliant fruit.

In both countries, the overall volume was smaller than anticipated so this fact and the resultant high quality should cause prices up to go up. Despite this, demand should be high so don't expect this vintage to hang around on the shelves very long.

New Portfolio Additions
we've added 5 new wineries already this year and still have our trip to Italy and Austria ahead of us. We're pleased to include the fine wines from the following producers: Schlossut Ebringen (Baden), Winzergenossenschaft Ebringen (Baden), Weingut Dr. Hermann (Mosel), Winzer e.g. Herrenberg-Honigsäckel (Pfalz), Weingut König (Rheingau). All of these new wines will arrive here in the US market in September. Become a member of our Friends of IBW Club to keep informed about their arrival.

We've made the difficult decision to sit out of this year's Wine South event in September. We'll miss seeing all of our loyal friends and fans this year as well as the opportunity to meet new friends. Instead we will conduct our own tasting on Saturday, September 30th and share with everyone our new selections having just arrived from across the pond.
